Helmet Size & Fit Guide
A helmet only protects you properly if it fits. Here's how to measure your head, check the fit and find your size in the brands we stock.
1. Measure your head
- Use a soft tape measure. Wrap it around the widest part of your head, about 2 cm above your eyebrows and just above your ears.
- Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight.
- Measure twice and use the larger number.
No tape measure? Wrap a piece of string around your head, mark it, then measure the string against a ruler.
2. Find your size
Sizes vary between brands, so always check the chart for the helmet you're looking at. If you're between two sizes, Triple 8 and Pro-Tec recommend going up a size and using the fit pads that come with the helmet to get a snug fit.

3. Check the fit
- Level: the helmet sits level on your head, with the front edge about two fingers' width above your eyebrows. It shouldn't tilt back to show your forehead.
- Snug: it feels firm all the way around, without pressure points. Use the fit pads or dial to fine-tune it.
- Straps: the side straps form a V just below each ear.
- Chin strap: fasten it so you can fit no more than two fingers between the strap and your chin.
- Shake test: gently shake your head side to side and up and down. The helmet should stay in place and not slide around.
Buying for kids? Choose a helmet that fits now, not one to grow into. A loose helmet won't protect them properly.
4. Riding an e-scooter?
In Queensland, e-scooter riders must wear an approved bicycle or motorbike helmet, properly fitted and fastened. Approved helmets carry a compliance sticker showing a recognised standard, such as AS/NZS 2063, EN 1078 or CPSC for bicycle helmets, or AS/NZS 1698 or ECE 22.05/22.06 for motorbike helmets. 5. When to replace your helmet
- After any crash or hard knock, even if you can't see any damage. Bicycle-certified helmets are designed to protect you from one impact.
- If the shell is cracked, the foam is dented or crushed, or the straps and buckle are worn.
- Every few years with regular use, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
